Getting the right measurements is the key to a perfect fit. Here’s how to do it:
1. Measure the Rough Opening
If your door frame is exposed (stud to stud):
- Width: Measure the distance between the left and right studs.
- Height: Measure from the floor (subfloor) to the top header.
- Tip: Take three measurements for each (top, middle, bottom) and use the smallest one.
This is the size most often used when ordering pre-hung doors.
2. Measure the Masonry Opening
If your door is surrounded by brick, stone, or concrete:
- Width: Measure from the inside edge of one masonry side to the other.
- Height: Measure from the sill (bottom) to the underside of the lintel (top).
- Depth (optional): If you’re replacing the full system, note wall thickness from exterior to interior finish.
This measurement helps when fitting a door frame inside an existing masonry opening.
3. Note the Frame Type & Swing
- Frame type: Choose between pre-hung (includes frame, hinges, and weatherstripping) or slab-only (just the door panel).
- Swing direction: Stand outside—if the hinges are on your right, it’s right-hand inswing. If on your left, left-hand inswing.
4. Double-Check Before Ordering
